Arguably
the most spectacular of all the Welsh castles,
perched high above the beach. A most awe-inspiring
site.
Built in the late 13th century by Edward I -the
most formidable of the “Iron Ring”.
The castle was taken by Owain Glyn Dwr in 1404,
during the War of the Roses, and was defended
against siege by a Welsh garrison - inspiring
the song "Men of Harlech" and a poem
which I wrote in 1959. Its first verse:
"Harlech castle upon the hill,
The old ruins there standing still,
For there is no one to fight and no one to kill,
As the men of Harlech in their graves lie silent
and still."
(COLIN JONES)
